In short: Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) reported a net profit of ₹4,863 crore for July to September 2026, down 21.5% from ₹6,191 crore a year ago. Revenue rose 30% to about ₹1.58 lakh crore. It is back in profit after a ₹1,873 crore loss in April to June.
Key numbers
| Jul–Sep 2026 | Jul–Sep 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Net profit | ₹4,863 crore | ₹6,191 crore |
| Revenue | ₹1.58 lakh crore | About ₹1.22 lakh crore |
| Crude processed | 10.41 million tonnes | +6% |
| Fuel sold in India | 13.47 million tonnes | +6.3% |
Why profit fell
- Selling below cost: with crude near $114 a barrel, BPCL earned less (or lost money) on selling some fuels at pump prices that have not kept up.
- Cooking gas losses: its total LPG loss reached ₹17,334 crore by 30 September. The government approved ₹7,594 crore in compensation, paid in 12 monthly instalments; BPCL counted six of them (₹3,797 crore) this quarter.
- Refining helped: higher refining margins softened the blow.
HPCL reported a similar pattern this week: profit fell 6% to ₹3,625 crore. If crude stays high, the government may need to pay more compensation or allow fuel price increases.
