What is going on
- Higher tax ate the gain: profit before tax rose 33%, but the tax bill more than doubled, so net profit fell.
- Refining is very profitable: HPCL earned an average of $27.89 for each barrel it refined in April–September, against $5.95 a year ago, before export duties.
- Cooking gas is a drag: with crude near $114, HPCL sells household LPG below cost. The government paid ₹3,960 crore in compensation, but HPCL is still carrying about ₹18,049 crore of LPG losses not yet covered.
Oil marketing companies like HPCL, BPCL and Indian Oil tend to struggle when crude prices rise fast, because retail fuel and LPG prices are not raised at the same pace. BPCL reports its results today.
