What it means for you

  • Banks want your deposits: deposits grew fast at HDFC Bank (18.8%), Axis Bank (21%) and ICICI Bank (27% including foreign currency deposits). Banks competing for money is good for fixed deposit rates, so compare FD rates before renewing.
  • Loans are growing quickly: advances rose 16% at HDFC Bank, 23% at Axis Bank and 24% at Yes Bank. Most of this is business and small-enterprise lending, but banks are also keen on retail loans.
  • Margins are under pressure: the interest margin fell at ICICI Bank (4.18% from 4.30%) and is low at Axis Bank (3.36%). After the RBI’s rate hike this month, banks may raise loan rates faster than deposit rates to protect margins.
  • Fewer bad loans: gross NPAs fell to 1.11% at HDFC Bank, 1.16% at Axis Bank and 1.20% at ICICI Bank, which means the banks are in good health.
