In short: Indian shares fell sharply on Friday morning. By 11 am the Sensex was down 568 points (0.8%) at 72,681 and the Nifty 50 was down 240 points (1.1%) at 22,448. Smaller companies were hit hardest: the Nifty Midcap index fell 2.5% and the Nifty Smallcap index fell 3.5%.

Markets had opened slightly higher, helped by IT stocks, but turned lower within the first hour. Both indices had already fallen for three sessions in a row before today.

Why markets are falling

  • Costly oil: Brent crude was near $114 a barrel on fears of supply disruption in West Asia. India imports most of its oil, so high prices raise inflation and hurt company profits.
  • Foreign selling: foreign investors sold shares worth ₹3,459 crore on Thursday. Indian funds bought ₹2,891 crore, which softened the fall.
  • Nervousness: India VIX, a measure of expected swings, rose 6.6% to 16.8.

What it means for you

  • If you invest through a SIP, falls like this let you buy more units at lower prices. Stopping a SIP during a fall locks in the lower value.
  • Small and midcap funds swing much more than large-cap funds in weeks like this. Make sure your mix matches how much risk you can take.
