In short: The Associated Press (AP) has called the US Senate for the Democratic Party, after a win in Iowa took them past a majority. Major US networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN, also project Democrats will win control of the House, though the AP had not called the House at the time of writing. Markets reacted calmly: US stock futures and the dollar slipped, while the Sensex opened 288 points higher at 77,185 on Wednesday.
This follows our election-day explainer, US midterm elections today: what Indian investors should watch.
The results so far
| Item | Status (early 4 November, IST) |
|---|---|
| Senate control | Democrats, as called by AP |
| House control | Democrats projected by ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN; AP yet to call |
| Senate seats flipped by Democrats | 6 so far: Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas |
| Races still being counted | Including Senate seats in Maine, Michigan and Alaska, and several House seats |
| White House | Not on the ballot; President Donald Trump (Republican) keeps his veto power |
Republicans held the Senate 53-47 and the House narrowly before the vote. Final seat counts may take days, as some states count mail ballots slowly.

Analysts quoted by Reuters were split on how much this changes. Pepperstone’s Chris Weston said the size of the Democratic win matters more than the win itself. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s Tai Hui noted that President Trump still controls trade, tariffs and foreign policy. Monex’s Jesper Koll said that because Trump governs largely through executive orders, a Democratic Congress may change little in policy. Others flagged a possible fight over the US debt ceiling next year, and tighter rules on AI and crypto.
What it means for you
- Rupee and NRIs: a weaker dollar usually helps the rupee. If you send or receive money from the US, watch rates over the next few days.
- Foreign investors: lower US bond yields can make markets like India more attractive to foreign funds. This is not guaranteed, as earnings and valuations matter too.
- IT stocks: Nasdaq futures fell on worries about AI regulation. Indian IT firms earn a large share of revenue from the US, so watch their results and US tech spending.
- Tariffs: trade policy stays largely with the White House, so the result may not change US tariffs on Indian goods soon.
- Interest rates: markets still see a high chance of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in December (78% on CME FedWatch). That affects the dollar more than the election may.

What to watch next
- The AP call on the House, and final counts in Maine, Michigan and Alaska.
- FII flow data and the rupee’s close on Wednesday.
- The US Federal Reserve’s December meeting, and any fresh tariff moves from Washington.
