In short: Investors in Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2021-22 Series VII who chose early exit were paid ₹14,167 per gram on 2 November 2026, against an issue price of ₹4,765 five years ago. That is a gain of about 197%, before interest. Three more SGB series have early-exit dates in November, and requests for two of them close on 9 November.

2020-21 Series II19 November19 October – 9 November

The redemption date and the request deadline are different. If you miss the request window, you cannot exit on that date and must wait for the next one, which comes every six months.

How the price and returns work

  • The RBI sets the price as the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold for the three business days before redemption, as published by IBJA.
  • Series VII: ₹14,167 minus ₹4,765 = ₹9,402 gain per gram (about 197%). Online buyers paid ₹4,715, so their gain is about 200%.
  • SGBs also pay 2.5% a year interest on the original amount, every six months. That is on top of the gain.
  • Early exit is allowed only after five years, on interest dates. Full maturity is eight years.

What it means for you

  • To exit: apply through the bank where you bought the bond, or your depository participant (broker) if it is in demat form, before the deadline.
  • Or hold on: exiting early is optional. You keep earning 2.5% interest until maturity, and the final price will depend on gold rates then.
  • Tax: interest is taxed at your slab rate. Capital gains on redemption at maturity are tax-free for individuals; check the current rules for early exits with a tax adviser.
