In short: More than $1 trillion in market value was wiped off 20 of the world’s biggest AI and chip stocks in the week ending 15 October 2026. Nvidia closed at about $214 on 16 October, around 12% below its 6 October record of $243. Shares of AMD, Micron, SK Hynix, Samsung and SoftBank also fell.
What triggered the fall
- Higher interest rates: hotter-than-expected US inflation raised fears of more rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve. The 10-year US Treasury yield is around 5.3%, its highest in about two decades. That makes borrowing to build data centres more expensive, and makes bonds more attractive than growth stocks.
- Questions about returns: research firm Gartner warned that more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure investment could face write-downs by 2030 if it does not earn enough.
- Revenue doubts: reports that revenue at some leading AI companies is growing more slowly than expected added to the worry.
Both sides of the debate
The worried view: investor Ray Dalio has said the market shows classic bubble signs: high prices, heavy borrowing and rising rates. Economist David Rosenberg sees a possible US recession next year. The IMF has warned that a sharp pullback in AI spending could expose weak spots in financial markets, because gains are concentrated in a few companies that also invest in each other.
The calmer view: analysts such as Dan Ives argue the fall reflects higher financing costs, not weaker demand for AI. Nvidia’s latest quarterly revenue topped $104 billion, and its shares trade at about 22 to 24 times expected earnings, well below their five-year average of over 40.
What it means for Indian investors
- If you hold US or Nasdaq funds through Indian mutual funds, expect bigger swings. These funds are heavy on the same large tech companies.
- Indian IT stocks are affected in both directions: AI could lower revenue from traditional IT services, but firms like HCLTech and Wipro also reported solid quarterly results this month.
- Foreign investors have sold over ₹3 lakh crore of Indian shares this year, so global risk-off moods can also hit Indian markets.
- Avoid reacting to a single week. Check that no one theme, including AI, makes up too large a share of your investments.
