What the numbers mean in plain words

  • Lending is growing fast. SBI’s loans grew nearly 18% in a year. Retail loans, which include home, car and personal loans, grew about 14.5%. Banks that want to keep growing loans usually compete harder for good borrowers.
  • Fewer bad loans. An NPA (non-performing asset) is a loan where the borrower has stopped paying for 90 days. SBI’s share of such loans fell to 1.39%, so it set aside less money for losses.
  • Why the share fell anyway. Much of the profit growth came from a one-time gain, and operating profit, the money from day-to-day banking, was slightly lower than a year ago. PSU bank shares were the weakest sector on Tuesday.

What it means for you

  • If you have an SBI loan, today’s results do not change your EMI. Your rate moves with SBI’s benchmark rates (such as its MCLR or repo-linked rate), so watch those announcements instead.
  • Planning a home or personal loan? Strong loan growth suggests lenders are keen to lend. Compare rates from a few lenders on our loans page and check the monthly cost with our EMI calculator.
  • Deposits up to ₹5 lakh per person per bank are insured by DICGC, whichever bank you use.
