What is at stake, as analysts describe it

  • If Republicans keep control of Congress, reports say President Donald Trump would have more room for tax and regulatory measures.
  • If Democrats win the House, the administration would face more scrutiny from Congress.
  • A divided Congress could raise questions on government spending, funding and the debt ceiling.
  • Morgan Stanley’s view, as reported by Goodreturns, is that the direct effect on markets is limited, and that trade, geopolitics and regulation matter more.

History is mixed for India. A Business Standard analysis since 1998 found Indian markets gave about 4% on average over six months and 26% over 12 months after US midterms, but some cycles were negative. Past patterns do not guarantee anything.

What it means for you

  • Results come in during your morning: the first US polls close around 7 pm Eastern time, which is about 5:30 am IST on Wednesday. Some close races can take days to call, so expect choppy markets.
  • SIP investors: one night of results rarely changes long-term goals. Avoid making big moves on election-day swings.
  • Rupee and NRIs: a stronger dollar hurts the rupee. If you send or receive money from the US, rates may move sharply this week.
  • IT stocks depend on US tech spending, so they may react to any change in US policy outlook. Rising US bond yields can also pull foreign money out of India.
