What each outcome could change
Analysts at Wright Research note that the White House holds most trade powers, so Congress has limited say over tariffs either way. A House controlled by Democrats would gain control of spending bills, committee investigations and debt-ceiling talks. Republican control of both chambers would, in their view, likely mean further tax cuts and higher defence spending. Historically, the president’s party has lost House seats in 18 of the 20 midterms since World War II. Koshfin does not predict outcomes.
What it means for you
- Expect noisy markets on 4 November. Indian markets open at 9:15 am IST while US votes are still being counted. Early leads can change as mail-in ballots are counted.
- Watch the rupee and FPI flows. Foreign investors have sold a record ₹3.04 lakh crore of Indian shares in 2026 so far (Wright Research). US policy on spending and borrowing affects US bond yields, which shape these flows.
- IT and pharma stocks earn much of their revenue in the US, so they tend to react to US policy news. Nifty IT rose 2.3% and Nifty Pharma 1.8% on 30 October.
- SIP investors do not need to act on one night’s results. Short-term swings around elections are common.
